St. Augustine police detained a woman Friday after responding to an emergency call reporting a visibly intoxicated mother yelling at her child in a public area, according to police accounts and video from the scene.
Officers were dispatched after receiving multiple calls expressing concern about public safety. Upon arrival, police said they determined the woman, identified as Karen, appeared heavily intoxicated and was involved in a verbal disturbance while rain was falling in the area.
Body-camera footage captures a tense exchange between the woman and officers, during which she questioned the officers’ authority and denied being drunk, stating she was “buzzed” but not impaired. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and asked her to leave the area, citing safety concerns and the need to restore traffic flow on a nearby bridge.
Police ultimately decided to detain the woman and remove her from the scene to prevent further escalation. As officers placed her in handcuffs and escorted her toward a patrol vehicle, the woman began resisting, repeatedly demanding to know why she was being arrested and asserting her rights.
The incident escalated as officers worked to restrain her and continue the arrest. No additional details about injuries, charges, or the condition of the child were immediately released.
