The Chaotic Fall of Tracie Hunter: From the Bench to Behind Bars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a scene that seemed ripped from a legal drama, chaos erupted inside a Cincinnati courtroom as former juvenile court judge Tracie Hunter was physically dragged away to begin her prison sentence<\/a><\/a>. The dramatic footage, captured by local news station WLWT, shows Hunter in a black dress and white bolero jacket going limp in the arms of a female deputy, who then hauled her out of the courtroom with her feet dragging across the floor<\/a><\/a>. It was a stunning fall from grace for a woman who had made history as the first African American elected to Hamilton County’s Juvenile Court<\/a><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Conviction That Led to Her Downfall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hunter’s legal troubles stemmed from a 2014 conviction for “having an unlawful interest in a public contract”<\/a>. The case centered on her brother, Stephen Hunter, who worked as a youth corrections officer. In July 2013, Stephen Hunter allegedly struck a young offender on the job, leading his boss to recommend his firing<\/a><\/a>. Prosecutors argued that Tracie Hunter improperly demanded and obtained confidential documents about the teen and passed them on to her brother to help him keep his job<\/a><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, Hunter fought the conviction through a series of appeals, maintaining her innocence throughout the process. “I violated no laws, I did not secure a public contract, I did not secure employment for my brother who worked for the court for about seven years before I was elected judge,” Hunter told NBC affiliate WLWT shortly before her sentencing. “They need to drop these unrighteous and I believe unlawful charges against me”<\/a><\/a>. She has consistently argued that her prosecution was politically motivated, a claim her supporters continue to echo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sentencing Hearing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The sentencing hearing before Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Patrick Dinkelacker was a tense affair. Dinkelacker detailed the numerous letters and recommendations he had received urging him not to send Hunter to prison<\/a>. In fact, he had been inundated with 45 letters from Hunter’s supporters demanding she be let off, some of which were sent to his personal address and appeared to attempt to “intimidate” the judge<\/a>. Despite the outpouring of support, Dinkelacker was unmoved and ordered Hunter’s six-month sentence to begin immediately<\/a><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The courtroom, filled with Hunter’s supporters, descended into anarchy. One woman, wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with the words “Justice for Judge Tracie M. Hunter,” was arrested and handcuffed as she appeared to charge toward the defense table<\/a><\/a><\/a>. As Hunter was dragged away, supporters could be heard yelling “no justice” and screaming that she was being treated “like an animal”<\/a><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aftermath and Medical Concerns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hunter was admitted to the Hamilton County Justice Center and housed in the medical unit<\/a>. She filed a handwritten grievance alleging that the way she was removed from the courtroom “aggravated a serious pre-existing medical condition to my neck, back and legs” and left her “in great pain, ever since”<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Court documents revealed that Hunter has metal rods in her back, “significant arthritis” in her lower back, and a spinal condition stemming from a car accident when she was a student at Miami University in the 1980s<\/a>. She was reportedly wearing a back brace during the hearing<\/a>. Despite these concerns, Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil defended his deputies’ actions, telling 700 WLW host Bill Cunningham that “there was nothing that I saw in the video that appeared to be an action that caused harm or injury”<\/a>. Neil added that his deputies “did a very good job in handling the matter” and that the removal was “a slow, deliberate carrying of Judge Hunter out of the courtroom”<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bishop Bobby Hilton, a supporter and friend who visited Hunter in jail, described the situation differently. He said Hunter was complaining about a sore back and neck and had three times requested medical aid that had not come by the time he left that evening<\/a>. He encouraged her to file an application for clemency with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Symbol of Controversy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hunter’s legal saga has become deeply polarizing. Her attorney, David Singleton, argued that his client had already suffered enough. “She’s lost everything almost. She lost her job as a judge, her law license, her ability to earn an income. She’s lost peace of mind,” he said<\/a><\/a>. However, special prosecutor Scott Croswell countered that the situation arose because Hunter wanted to “play by her own set of rules”<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding to the intrigue, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters called Governor DeWine to personally ask him to commute the sentence<\/a>. At the time of reporting, it was unclear what action, if any, DeWine would take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Hunter’s supporters, the image of a former judge being dragged from her own courtroom will forever symbolize what they see as a grave injustice against a woman who dedicated her career to juvenile justice.
