WASHINGTON \u2014 The pastor from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth<\/a>\u2019s home church in Tennessee said last week on a podcast that he wants James Talarico to die, referring to the Texas Democratic state representative and Presbyterian seminarian who regularly discusses his Christian faith in his current bid for U.S. Senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brooks Potteiger, an evangelical pastor who has been described as Hegseth\u2019s closest spiritual adviser<\/a>, repeatedly attacked Talarico on the podcast \u201cReformation Red Pill.\u201d The show is hosted by Joshua Haymes, a former pastoral intern at Potteiger\u2019s church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After referring to the Texas Democrat as \u201ca wolf,\u201d a \u201cdemon,\u201d and \u201ca snake,\u201d the two talked about what they hope becomes of Talarico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFirst and foremost, we pray that a man like this would be cut to the heart,\u201d Haymes said. He said he puts Talarico in the category of \u201cpublic enemies,\u201d or those you \u201care not called to love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is where you have imprecatory psalms. This is where you pray strongly,\u201d he said. \u201cThe psalmist is not shy. God, destroy them. Make them as dung on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI pray that God kills him,\u201d Haymes continued. \u201cUltimately, that means killing his heart and raising him up to new life in Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Potteiger concurred. \u201cRight, right,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want him crucified with Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haymes repeated that he wants \u201cdeath and new life\u201d for Talarico. \u201cAnd if it would not be within God\u2019s will to do so, stop him by any means necessary,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, the podcast host said Talarico \u201cis the kind of guy you pray imprecatory psalms against. And I mean that actually.\u201d An imprecatory psalm is a biblical song or prayer that invokes God\u2019s judgment, curses or destruction upon enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYep,\u201d Potteiger said in response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
