But one family speaking out has drawn particular attention \u2014 describing a sequence of moments that many are only now beginning to understand."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the Montgomery County community are mourning the deaths of two middle school students after a bus was involved in a multi-vehicle crash in Carroll County Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People gathered at Kenwood Middle School on Saturday, March 28 to remember Zoe and Arianna, the two eighth-graders who died following the crash. There were many tears shed and hugs shared, but being together helped community members grieve and understand what led up to the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/mna0hMfRQm88BhiiSdd8Sg--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MDtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/wkrn_articles_723\/733aa2614106b6746b4592cf6c4829de\" alt=\"2 students killed in crash involving Montgomery County school bus heading to field trip, officials say\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident happened around noon on Friday, March 27, while bus was traveling from Kenwood Middle School in Clarksville to the Toyota Hub City Grand Prix Greenpower USA Race at the Jackson Rockabilly Stadium, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Xaviel Lugo and his wife, Rosalee Lugo, were driving behind the bus, which their daughter was riding, along with 24 other students and five adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey had spent all year building a car, a race car, from the ground up,\u201d Xaviel said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gray-ky3-prod.gtv-cdn.com\/resizer\/v2\/HIJLM5WLYRDQ5HRRQJOAJGMA5A.png?auth=afd188570158e7c1bed4e34f37368e3c14a1069741928c2c7ecfcd9b3fb763da&amp;width=800&amp;height=450&amp;smart=true\" alt=\"Willow Springs School District school bus crashes into tree\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the students\u2019 excitement about racing their homemade cars took a deadly turn at the intersection of Highway 70 and Cedar Grove in Carroll County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Tennessee Highway Patrol, the school bus was involved in a crash with a Tennessee Department of Transportation dump truck and a Chevrolet Trailblazer. Two students died at the scene and at least seven people were reportedly injured.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clarksvillenow.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/43\/files\/2026\/03\/Student-Vigil_KenwoodMiddleSchool_ClarksvilleNOW_28MAR26_HannahWalker_1023-1200x768.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"My heart is heavy': Mourners gather in vigil for Kenwood Middle students killed in bus crash | PHOTOS - ClarksvilleNow.com\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI swerved out the way from all the debris and into the grass area, parked it as quickly as I was able to,\u201d Xaviel recalled. \u201cMy wife and I jumped out the car. She went straight for the bus, and I was calling 911 to get emergency services out as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before emergency crews arrived, the couple said they jumped into action and helped the students get to safety.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/people.com\/thmb\/lDCTXOC_LJQAtgesjKT2x9_B0Q4=\/1500x0\/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2)\/Arianna-Pearson-Zoe-Davis-032926-1b6ae0263f95486e83aa2b61eec2d38d.jpg\" alt=\"2 Children Killed in Tennessee School Bus Crash Identified: Zoe Davis, Arianna Pearson\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the first boys, Wesley, he was amazing,\u201d Xaviel explained. \u201cI don\u2019t know if he was hurt or anything, but as soon as we were able to get him out the bus, you didn\u2019t even have to tell him. He knew exactly what he had to do, and that was to help his classmates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Xaviel said he was able to find and save his own daughter from the bus, adding that she was one of the students flown to a hospital due to the nature of her injuries. Even though she\u2019s still getting treatment, she\u2019s expected to be okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy daughter saw one of the girls that passed away\u2026 I just wish she never would have experienced that,\u201d Xaviel told News 2.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/470e1e6\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/736x414+0+0\/resize\/1280x720!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fewscripps-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Ffa%2F87%2Ff7e2db1a4804a77343f92ce9bc5f%2Fscreenshot-2026-03-28-212333.jpg\" alt=\"Father rescues students after deadly Kenwood Middle School bus crash\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashley Bourne said her son was also on the bus and called her after the crash, which is something that will haunt her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe went to turn the camera in FaceTime, and that\u2019s when I saw the bus, and that\u2019s where the panic kind of set in,\u201d Bourne described. \u201cMy son, when he said he jumped out the back of it \u2014 it was about an eight-foot drop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her son reportedly suffered a concussion following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/mkw38B6SvlXM.PVeU5hMGw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTY1NjtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/the_tennessean_slideshows_726\/7b67b814536c039a2e1a1d542f784b15\" alt=\"Clarksville vigil draws community together to mourn students killed in bus crash\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The night after the deadly crash, the Montgomery County community came together at Kenwood Middle School to pray and support those who were grieving.
