The group disappeared on May 14 while exploring underwater caves in Vaavu Atoll at a depth of about 50 meters, which is well beyond the nation&#8217;s 30-meter recreational diving limit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/5-italian-divers-die-while-exploring-cave-in-maldives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au.\/news\/2026-05-18\/italian-divers-bodies-found-maldives-sea-cave\/106694498\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Victims and the Recovery Operation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The victims have been identified as Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of ecology at the University of Genoa; her daughter, Giorgia Sommacal, a biomedical engineering student; Muriel Oddenino, a research fellow; Federico Gualtieri, a recent marine biology graduate; and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/5-italian-divers-die-while-exploring-cave-in-maldives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/15\/world\/asia\/maldives-diving-italians.html?searchResultPosition=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. The group was on a research trip to monitor the marine environment&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/15\/world\/asia\/maldives-diving-italians.html?searchResultPosition=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recovery effort was perilous. The body of instructor Gianluca Benedetti was found on the day of the disappearance at the cave entrance&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/5-italian-divers-die-while-exploring-cave-in-maldives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c62e0p7rd2ro?at_medium=RSS&amp;amp;at_campaign=rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. The four other victims were located days later, &#8220;pretty much together&#8221; in the deepest recesses of the cave&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au.\/news\/2026-05-18\/italian-divers-bodies-found-maldives-sea-cave\/106694498\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/17\/asia\/maldives-diving-italians-die-cave-hnk-intl?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. The mission claimed another life when a Maldivian military diver, Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhee, died from decompression sickness during an earlier search attempt&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au.\/news\/2026-05-18\/italian-divers-bodies-found-maldives-sea-cave\/106694498\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/italian-divers-maldives-cave-bodies-recovered-investigations-052026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. A team of specialized Finnish cave divers, deployed by the Divers Alert Network (DAN) Europe, ultimately recovered the remaining bodies&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-20\/italian-divers-last-bodies-recovered-maldives-cave\/106703700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/italian-divers-maldives-cave-bodies-recovered-investigations-052026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. Maldives officials stated the expedition&#8217;s permit application did not indicate they planned to enter a cave, and two of the deceased were not on the approved researcher list&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/italian-divers-maldives-cave-bodies-recovered-investigations-052026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>. The Italian tour operator has denied authorizing such a deep dive, noting the divers appeared to be using standard recreational equipment, not the specialized gear required for cave diving at that depth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/5-italian-divers-recovered-maldives-202048836.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>.
