I took a deep breath, trying to steady the storm brewing within me. My mind raced with questions, each one sharper and more painful than the last. How could this have happened under my own roof? How could I have been so blind?
“Audrey,” I murmured gently, wrapping my arm around her protectively. Her body trembled against mine, and I could feel the rapid beat of her heart, like a bird trapped in a cage. “I’m taking you out of here.”
Helen rose from her seat, a look of indignation on her face. “Mr. Hayes, your mother only wanted what’s best for—”
Enough,” I said firmly, cutting her off. My patience had expired, my trust shattered. “Pack your things and leave. You have ten minutes.”
The nurse hesitated, but the severity of my gaze left no room for argument. With a huff, she turned on her heel and left the room, muttering under her breath. My focus shifted back to my mother, whose silence was both infuriating and telling.
“Mother,” I began, struggling to keep my voice steady, “how could you stand by and let this happen?”
She finally looked up, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I… I thought it would make her stronger. I thought she needed discipline.”
“Discipline?” I echoed incredulously, glancing at Audrey’s bruised arms. “This isn’t discipline; it’s abuse.”
Audrey’s grip on my arm tightened, and I squeezed her hand reassuringly. “We’re leaving tonight,” I told her softly. “I’ll make sure you’re safe.”
My mother opened her mouth to protest, but I raised my hand to stop her. “No more,” I said firmly. “I won’t let you or anyone else hurt her again.”
I helped Audrey to her feet, supporting her as we made our way to the door. Behind us, my mother’s sobs filled the silent room, but I couldn’t afford to look back. My priority was Audrey and the safety of our unborn child.
As we stepped outside, the cool evening air washed over us, a stark contrast to the oppressive tension inside. I led Audrey to the car, helping her settle into the passenger seat. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying, but there was a flicker of hope in them now—a small, precious light amidst the darkness.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I didn’t want to cause trouble.”
“You haven’t,” I assured her, starting the engine. “None of this is your fault.”
As we drove away from the house, the weight of what had happened pressed heavily on my shoulders. I couldn’t change the past, but I was determined to create a better future for Audrey and our child.
We drove in silence, each of us lost in our thoughts. But despite the pain and betrayal, there was a sense of relief in knowing we were finally free from the toxic environment that had surrounded us.
The road ahead was uncertain, but I was ready to fight for my family. I promised myself that I would do everything in my power to protect them, no matter the cost.
This was just the beginning of our journey. There was still so much to uncover, so many questions left unanswered. But as long as Audrey and I stood together, I knew we could face whatever challenges lay ahead.
