A chaotic scene unfolded in a quiet residential neighborhood Thursday afternoon when an erratic suspect was subdued with a taser after violently attacking his own mother and a neighbor who attempted to intervene. The incident left two people injured and raised concerns about mental health intervention in the community.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Marcus Webb, was reportedly exhibiting bizarre behavior throughout the morning, according to witnesses. His mother, 62-year-old Patricia Webb, called 911 after her son began destroying furniture inside their shared home and making incoherent threats. Before officers could arrive, however, Marcus allegedly turned his aggression toward her, shoving her to the ground and striking her repeatedly.
A neighbor, 45-year-old David Hoffman, heard the commotion and rushed over to help. Hoffman told investigators that he tried to pull Marcus off his mother, but the suspect quickly redirected his fury toward Hoffman, tackling him and attempting to choke him. The two men struggled in the front yard as other neighbors screamed for help.
When police arrived on the scene, they found Marcus still on top of Hoffman, ignoring verbal commands to stop. Officers reported that the suspect appeared disoriented and aggressive, showing no signs of compliance. Fearing for Hoffman’s safety and the safety of others in the vicinity, one officer deployed his taser, striking Marcus in the back and delivering a five-second shock that incapacitated him long enough for officers to move in and handcuff him.
Both Patricia Webb and David Hoffman were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Patricia sustained bruising and a possible concussion, while Hoffman was treated for abrasions and a sore throat from the choking attempt. Marcus Webb was evaluated at the scene by paramedics before being taken into custody.
He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of domestic battery. Authorities have requested a psychiatric evaluation, citing his erratic behavior during the attack.
