A part-time coffee shop employee was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly trashing the store where she worked, following what she described as an exhausting and unsupported 18-hour shift. The incident has sparked a debate about labor practices and the mental toll of overworking part-time staff.
The suspect, 22-year-old Maya Collins, had reportedly been on the clock since 6:00 AM the previous day. According to store managers, Collins agreed to cover for a sick coworker in the morning and was then asked to stay late when the evening shift failed to show up. By midnight, she had worked 18 consecutive hours with only one brief break, serving customers, cleaning equipment, and handling a steady stream of orders.
Witnesses say Collins appeared visibly fatigued and agitated in the final hours of her shift. Security footage reviewed by police shows her closing the store at 12:30 AM, then suddenly grabbing bags of coffee beans and throwing them against the walls. She allegedly overturned tables, smashed several mugs, kicked over display cases, and ripped the register from its mounting. The total damage has been estimated at over $8,000.
When officers arrived, they found Collins sitting on the floor amid the wreckage, crying and repeating that she “couldn’t take it anymore.” She was taken into custody without resistance and later charged with criminal mischief and vandalism.
In a statement to investigators, Collins said she had repeatedly asked for relief throughout the day but was told no one was available. She claimed she was running on no sleep and had not eaten properly in hours. “I snapped. I’m not proud of it, but I felt like nobody cared if I collapsed,” she reportedly told officers.
