A violent series of events in South Omaha Wednesday afternoon left three police officers injured and a shooting suspect dead. The chaos began at Phil’s Foodway around noon when a 61-year-old man was shot multiple times in the chest by a man in his late 20s. Authorities described the victim’s injuries as serious but non-life-threatening.
Police quickly tracked the suspect’s vehicle to a QuikTrip gas station near 32nd and L Streets, where a tense standoff unfolded. The suspect barricaded himself in the restroom, firing at officers and injuring two, while a bystander managed to escape unharmed. Officers returned fire, ultimately neutralizing the suspect.
Three officers were injured—two by gunfire, one by shrapnel—all non-life-threatening. They were placed on critical incident leave while the investigation continues with support from the Nebraska State Patrol and nearby police departments.
Mayor John Ewing Jr. and Governor Jim Pillen praised the officers’ bravery. The incident disrupted traffic, closed nearby streets, and prompted QuikTrip to reiterate its commitment to employee and customer safety.
