Confusion about supposed stimulus checks, IRS “relief deposits,” and “tariff dividends” has grown in recent months, largely due to misleading headlines and viral posts. Many users now believe a new federal stimulus check will arrive in December 2025, but this is false. No federal law approving new nationwide payments has been passed, and the government is not preparing checks, deposits, or debit cards.
Most misunderstandings come from three sources being misrepresented as new aid. First, routine IRS tax refunds are being framed as special payments, even though they happen every year. Second, some taxpayers are only now receiving unclaimed 2021 Recovery Rebate Credits, leading to the false impression of a new program. Third, several states have issued their own tax rebates, but these apply only to state residents—not the entire country.
Another rumor claims the IRS will deposit a $2,000 “Relief Payment” this December. This mixes a real update—future increased use of direct deposit—with a nonexistent payment. Until Congress passes new legislation, no new federal payouts can exist.
