San Diego Police Deploy K9 and Less-Lethal Rounds to Subdue Suspect After Reported Parking Lot Attack

A violent incident in downtown San Diego has drawn attention after police used a K9 unit and less-lethal rounds to subdue a suspect accused of attacking a parking attendant.

According to authorities, the incident began when a man allegedly stabbed a parking attendant twice in the head using a wooden cane. The attack reportedly occurred in a parking lot, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement.

Police later identified the suspect as Lathapoun Keovongsa. Officers were able to locate him nearby, where he was reportedly still holding a long wooden cane described as approximately six feet in length.

Video footage and reports indicate that officers issued commands for the suspect to comply, but the situation quickly escalated when he did not follow instructions. Given the potential threat, officers deployed less-lethal rounds in an attempt to gain control of the situation.

When those measures did not immediately resolve the encounter, a police K9 unit was released. The K9 assisted officers in subduing the suspect, allowing them to take him into custody without further escalation.

The parking attendant who was injured during the initial incident was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have stated that the injuries were not considered life-threatening, though the attack itself has raised concerns about safety in public spaces.

Incidents involving weapons—even unconventional ones like a cane—are treated seriously by law enforcement, particularly when there is an immediate threat to others. Officers are trained to use a range of response options, including less-lethal tools and K9 units, depending on the level of resistance and risk.

As with many cases involving use of force, the incident is expected to be reviewed to ensure that procedures were followed appropriately. This may include analysis of body camera footage and other available evidence.

The situation has sparked discussion online, with viewers reacting to both the initial attack and the methods used by police to stop the suspect.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about potential charges or court proceedings. The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to gather information about the incident.
