I SPENT OUR MONEY ON A LUXURY SUITE AND A YOUNG MISTRESS WHILE MY WIFE

As the plane touched down in Guadalajara, a wave of reality came crashing over me. I wasn’t just returning to my wife; I was returning to the consequences of my absence, the consequences of my deceit. The airport buzzed with people, but they felt like ghosts passing by as I clung to my suitcase, letting the crowd carry me along.

Outside, I hailed a cab and gave the driver the familiar address. I stared out the window, my mind replaying the moment I received Mauricio’s call. The city passed by in a blur, but the memory was sharp, piercing.

When the cab pulled up to our house, my heart pounded. The garden looked like it always did, but everything else felt different, heavy with anticipation of what awaited inside. I hesitated at the front door, my hand hovering over the handle. Could I face Elena? Could I face the truth?

Finally, I pushed the door open. The house was quiet, too quiet, except for the steady ticking of a clock in the hallway. I found Elena sitting in the living room, a blanket wrapped around her fragile frame. Her eyes met mine, and a mix of relief and hurt flashed across her face.

“Rodrigo,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. Her vulnerability was palpable, and guilt gnawed at my insides.

I sat beside her, reaching for her hand. “Elena, I’m so sorry. How are you feeling?”

She looked at me, her eyes searching for something—perhaps sincerity. “I’m recovering, but it was scary. I didn’t know if you’d make it back.”

“I tried, but the flights…there was a problem,” I stumbled through my words, knowing they were as flimsy as paper.

Her gaze never wavered. “Mauricio told me everything,” she said quietly, and my heart dropped. “He was here every step of the way, Rodrigo. He stayed when I needed someone.”

I could feel the walls of my carefully constructed lies crumbling. I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. What could I say? I’d chosen a fantasy over my reality, a reckless fling over my marriage.

“I don’t know what you’re going through,” Elena continued, her voice steady despite the hurt. “But you need to figure it out. I need to know that you’re here, really here.”

Her words hit me like a punch. She deserved better, and deep down, I knew I had to make a choice. I had to decide if I wanted to save our marriage or let it end.

Days passed, each one filled with tension, each one demanding a decision. I found myself sitting alone in our bedroom, staring at the ceiling, wondering how I could fix the damage I’d done. I needed to confront the truth, to face the man I had become.

I picked up my phone, hesitating before dialing Mauricio’s number. It was time to face him, to admit my failures, and maybe, just maybe, find a way to regain his trust.

The phone rang, and he answered, his voice cautious. “Rodrigo. What do you want?”

“I need to talk, Mau. I’ve made a mess of everything, and I don’t know how to fix it. I need your help,” I admitted, my voice filled with a desperation I couldn’t hide.

There was a pause, and then Mauricio sighed. “I’ll hear you out, but you need to be honest this time.”

“I will be,” I promised, knowing it was my only chance to make things right.

As I ended the call, I knew the road ahead was uncertain and fraught with challenges. But I was ready to face them, to rebuild what I had broken.
