Two suspects have been charged after a 34-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Livonia following the theft of his backpack.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Spencer Krusell, 30, of Highland Park, and Scott Harrington, 26, of Taylor, in connection with the death of Nicholos “Nick” Hatcher of Detroit.
Livonia police said officers were called around 4:48 p.m. on May 28 to the area of Middlebelt Road and Orangelawn Street after reports of an unresponsive person. Officers found Hatcher suffering from a stab wound to the chest, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to family, Hatcher worked as a prep cook and was leaving his job to catch a bus to his second job in Detroit when someone stole his backpack. Hatcher followed them to a nearby location and confronted them. Prosecutors allege the confrontation escalated, and Krusell pulled out a pocketknife and stabbed Hatcher in the chest before fleeing.
Krusell is charged with second-degree murder and being a fourth-offense habitual offender. Harrington is charged with larceny in a building and receiving and concealing stolen property.
Police said Krusell was on parole at the time of the stabbing. He was given no bond after being arraigned in 16th District Court. Harrington was given a $400,000 cash bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
